How to Start an Online Store in Jordan: A Step-by-Step Guide

To start an online store in Jordan you need seven things in order: a registered business with the right official bodies, a platform, pricing in Jordanian dinars, payment methods that Jordanian buyers use (cash on delivery, CliQ and cards), a delivery partner, a storefront in Arabic and English, and a launch plan measured by real orders. This guide walks through each step the way we run it with merchants on Shopify, for Jordanian founders as well as English-speaking entrepreneurs and expats building a brand from Amman. Where rules apply, we point you to the official authority rather than giving legal advice.

Flow diagram of the steps to launch an online store in Jordan: register, choose a platform, price in Jordanian dinars, set up payments and delivery, then launch a bilingual store Figure: the seven steps of this guide grouped into five stages, in the order we follow with merchants.

Step 1: Registration and licensing basics

Sort out your legal set-up before you think about design. It is not just paperwork: card payment providers and banks usually ask for business documents before they activate a merchant account. The official bodies a merchant in Jordan deals with:

BodyWhat it handles
Ministry of Industry, Trade and SupplyTrade name registration and the commercial register
Companies Control Department (within the Ministry)Company registration if you choose a company structure
Greater Amman Municipality or your local municipalityThe vocational licence; inside Amman’s boundaries this is governed by the Vocational Licensing Law No. 11 of 2022
Income and Sales Tax DepartmentTax registration and your tax number
Chamber of Commerce or IndustryMembership and certification of some documents, depending on the activity

People often search for a separate “e-commerce licence”. The precise answer depends on your structure, your location and what you sell, so we do not give a legal opinion here. Check the official websites of these bodies or speak to a licensed accountant before launch, and keep digital copies of every document because you will need them when opening a payment account.

Step 2: Choose your platform

Your platform is the foundation for payments, delivery, advertising and growth. The realistic options for a merchant in Jordan:

OptionFitsWatch out for
ShopifyStores that will scale with ads, large catalogues and later Gulf expansionShopify Payments is not available in Jordan, so cards go through a third-party provider
Regional hosted platformsMerchants selling mainly in the markets those platforms were built forWhether local payments and delivery are supported in Jordan specifically
WooCommerceTeams with technical staff for hosting and updatesSecurity, speed and maintenance are on you
Custom buildRare cases with unique requirementsCost, time, and dependence on one developer

We build on Shopify because it keeps catalogue, checkout, shipping, tracking and apps in one place, and it handles growth from a few dozen products to thousands. We compare the options fairly in the best ecommerce platform in Jordan.

At the time of writing (October 2026), Shopify’s pricing page offers a 3-day free trial and the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and notes that third-party transaction fees may apply when you use a third-party payment provider, at a rate that depends on the plan. The full cost picture is in Shopify pricing in Jordan, and if you hope to start at zero cost, read how to create a free online store to see what is genuinely free and what is not.

What to prepare before the build

Content, not design, is what usually delays a launch. Have these ready first: a product sheet with names, JOD prices, SKUs, variants and stock; consistent product photos plus at least one in-use image; descriptions written for Jordanian buyers that cover warranty and delivery time; a short domain name with matching social handles; and written returns, exchange and delivery policies.

Step 3: Price in Jordanian dinars and protect your margin

Set the store currency to the Jordanian dinar and display prices the way local customers expect. Then calculate the real margin per product, not the paper margin:

  • Selling price
  • minus product cost
  • minus delivery cost, if you carry all or part of it
  • minus cash on delivery collection fees or payment provider fees
  • minus an allowance for returns and refused orders
  • minus ad cost per order

What remains is your real profit, and it tells you the highest ad cost per order you can afford. Ask the Income and Sales Tax Department or your accountant which sales tax applies to your products, and decide whether your displayed prices include it. Decide your delivery policy too: a flat fee, free delivery above a threshold, or different rates for Amman and the governorates.

Funnel diagram from selling price to real profit: subtract product cost, delivery and payment fees, then returns and ad cost per order Figure: each line you subtract from the selling price shrinks the margin; what remains is the real profit per order.

Step 4: Payments: cash on delivery, CliQ and cards

A Jordanian store needs at least three payment methods:

MethodWhyPractical note
Cash on deliveryPreferred by many buyers, especially on a first orderConfirm the order on WhatsApp before dispatch
CliQInstant transfers in dinars between bank accounts and walletsAccept it with manual payment instructions or a custom app
CardsFor buyers who prefer to pay onlineThrough a licensed third-party provider, since Shopify Payments is not available in Jordan

CliQ is the instant payment system owned and operated by the Jordan Payments and Clearing Company (JoPACC) under the supervision of the Central Bank of Jordan. Customers pay using an alias or a mobile number instead of an account number, and it covers domestic transfers in dinars. We explain how to connect it in CliQ payment on Shopify in Jordan. The higher your share of prepaid orders, the less cash sits with your courier and the fewer refusals you see at the door.

Step 5: Delivery inside Amman and to the governorates

Pick a courier that covers your customers’ areas, collects cash on delivery and remits it on a written schedule, handles returns clearly, and sends tracking back to your store. Set up at least two shipping zones in Shopify, Amman and the governorates, and show the delivery time on the product page. We put a full comparison table and a pre-contract question list in delivery companies in Jordan for online stores, so we will not repeat it here.

Step 6: An Arabic and English storefront

Shoppers in Jordan browse in both Arabic and English, and part of your audience is residents and expats who prefer English. A bilingual store needs more than translation:

  • A theme that handles right-to-left layout without breaking pages or checkout.
  • Product names and descriptions written for each language, not literal machine translation.
  • The spellings people actually search, including variants of Arabic words such as الكتروني and إلكتروني.
  • Clear delivery, returns and warranty pages in both languages.

We built Cliqat as a bilingual store with more than 15,000 products; it launched in 60 days and started selling in its first month.

Step 7: Launch and marketing

Do not start ads until the foundation works. Before launch, check:

  1. A full test order with every payment method, from Amman and from another governorate.
  2. Meta Pixel with the Conversions API and Google Analytics 4, with the purchase event recorded once at the correct value.
  3. A visible WhatsApp button and order confirmation messages ready.
  4. Policy and contact pages complete.

Most Jordanian stores then start with Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram, followed by Google Shopping once Merchant Center is in order. Judge success by orders delivered in the store and by net sales against total ad spend, not by likes or by purchases that ad platforms report on their own. For wider market context, read our eCommerce in Jordan guide.

From our experience, we took Poshy from selling only on Instagram to a complete Shopify store in three weeks, with a conversion audit and pricing study before launch, and the first order arrived in launch week. The order is the same on every project: a sound foundation first, then ads.

Conclusion

Starting an online store in Jordan is an organised project, not a leap in the dark: register with the official bodies, choose a platform that grows with you, price in dinars after every cost, enable cash on delivery, CliQ and cards, choose a delivery partner carefully, build in two languages, and launch with full tracking. Frequently asked questions

What are the main steps to start an online store in Jordan?

Register your activity with the official bodies, choose a platform such as Shopify, price in Jordanian dinars, enable cash on delivery, CliQ and cards, sign a delivery partner, build the store in Arabic and English, then launch with measured campaigns. Each step depends on the one before it, so do not start ads before payments, delivery and tracking work.

Do I need a licence to sell online in Jordan?

Requirements depend on your business form, location and what you sell. The reference bodies are the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply for trade names and the commercial register, Greater Amman Municipality or your local municipality for the vocational licence, and the Income and Sales Tax Department for tax registration. Confirm with them or a licensed accountant before launch; this article is not legal advice.

Does Shopify work in Jordan?

Yes. A merchant in Jordan can open a Shopify store and sell in Jordanian dinars. Shopify Payments is not on Shopify's list of supported countries for Jordan, so cards are accepted through a third-party provider, with cash on delivery and CliQ added as store payment methods.

How long does it take to launch an online store in Jordan?

It depends on catalogue size, how ready your photos and descriptions are, and your paperwork. In our work, Poshy went from an Instagram seller to a complete Shopify store in three weeks, and Cliqat launched a bilingual store with more than 15,000 products in 60 days.
