eCommerce in Jordan Guide: Selling on Shopify

eCommerce in Jordan is a mid-sized but active and crowded market, led by cash on delivery and daily delivery inside Amman, with a buyer who compares prices carefully and asks about authenticity and warranty. We have built and managed more than 12 Jordanian stores on Shopify in electronics, perfume, beauty and home appliances, and this guide summarises what we learned about payments, delivery, customs and Jordanian buyer behaviour.
The Jordanian buyer: what do they want before they buy?
Three things repeat in every category we have worked in:
- A clear price: the Jordanian buyer compares stores against each other and against shops downtown and in malls. A price that includes delivery, or with delivery clearly stated, is what convinces them.
- Authenticity and warranty: in electronics, perfume and appliances, “is it original?” and “what is the warranty?” come before price. A product page that answers both clearly saves dozens of WhatsApp messages.
- Human contact: a WhatsApp button that replies within minutes sells more than any automated chat window. The buyer wants to know there is a person behind the store.
From our experience, a store that places warranty, returns policy and delivery fees on the product page itself converts better than one that hides them on a terms page.
Cash on delivery: the dominant method and how to manage it
Cash on delivery is the first payment method in Jordan, and that will not change soon. The problem is not the option itself but its management: an unconfirmed order that ships and is then refused costs you delivery fees both ways and takes a product out of stock without a sale. What we apply in Jordanian stores:
- Confirm every cash-on-delivery order on WhatsApp before shipping, automatically with a message right after the order and then a human follow-up if the customer does not reply.
- A clear cash-on-delivery fee or a minimum order value, to push small orders towards prepayment.
- Restrict the option for high-value orders or distant areas when the refusal rate there is high.
- Encourage prepayment with a small discount or free shipping.
Our WhatsApp Pilot app sends order confirmation and the tracking link automatically the moment an order is placed, and that alone reduces fake orders. Full details are in cash on delivery on Shopify in the Gulf and automatic WhatsApp order confirmation.
CliQ: the instant payment that changed the Jordanian market
CliQ is Jordan’s instant payment system between bank accounts, and it has become the natural second choice after cash on delivery. The buyer transfers the amount to the store’s alias or phone number from their banking app in seconds, and the merchant receives it immediately with no card fees. Two ways to accept it on Shopify:
| Method | How it works | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Manual payment instructions | The customer selects CliQ at checkout, sees the alias and transfer instructions, and the store confirms payment manually | Small stores with limited order volume |
| Custom payment app | An app links the bank account to the store, matches the transfer to the order automatically and updates its status | Stores with hundreds of orders per month |
We developed a custom CliQ app for Xmart integrated with Bank al Etihad, a store that receives hundreds of orders a month from Meta and Google campaigns. We explain the options in CliQ payment on Shopify in Jordan. Alongside CliQ, cards through a licensed local gateway remain essential for buyers who prefer electronic payment, with local wallets as an extra option.
Delivery companies: Amman first, the governorates at another rate
Delivery in Jordan is a mature market with companies specialised in eCommerce that collect cash on delivery and remit it to the merchant periodically. What to set up on Shopify:
- At least two zones: Amman with one rate and time (often one business day), and the governorates with a higher rate and longer time.
- Remittance schedule: know when the delivery company remits cash-on-delivery amounts, because it affects cash flow.
- Technical integration: an app or integration that sends orders to the company and returns the tracking number to the store, followed by a WhatsApp message to the customer with the tracking link.
- A written returns policy: who pays return fees and when returns are accepted.
We compare settings and zones in Shopify shipping setup and Gulf couriers.
Customs and imports: what matters to the merchant
Many Jordanian stores import their goods or sell imported products from local distributors. Points to watch:
- Commercial importing requires a commercial registration, a vocational licence and tax registration, with clearance through a licensed customs broker.
- Customs duties and sales tax vary by product category, so build them into the selling price before launch, not after.
- Buying from local distributors eases the start and solves the warranty question, but it requires continuous inventory sync so you do not sell what has run out.
- Selling from Jordan to the Gulf is possible through international shipping, with clarity that destination fees are on the customer or built into the price; see selling internationally from a Gulf Shopify store.
Advertising in the Jordanian market
The Jordanian market responds well to Meta catalogue campaigns and to Google Shopping for products searched by name. What we learned managing campaigns for Jordanian stores:
- Advantage+ Shopping campaigns with a clean catalogue are the backbone for electronics and perfume stores.
- Google Performance Max and Shopping work well when Merchant Center is organised and product data is complete.
- Measure performance by MER (store net sales divided by total spend), not platform ROAS, because cash on delivery means an order recorded on the platform may not become an actual sale.
- Key seasons: Ramadan, White Friday and back to school, all of which need a plan and scheduled discounts that roll back automatically through SalePilot.
From our experience across more than 12 Jordanian stores
We managed campaigns for Xmart, an electronics store whose Meta ROAS reached 11x in Q2 2025 and whose blended MER exceeded 10x in September 2026 with hundreds of orders a month. We built Cliqat, a bilingual store with more than 15,000 products, in 60 days, and migrated beauty stores from Magento and Odoo to Shopify while preserving order and customer history. The common thread: complete local payments (cards, cash on delivery, CliQ), WhatsApp order confirmation and precise tracking from day one. That is what we build within our Shopify store development service.
Conclusion
eCommerce in Jordan rewards the store that manages cash on delivery intelligently, accepts CliQ and cards, sets delivery correctly between Amman and the governorates, and answers authenticity and warranty questions before they are asked. Frequently asked questions
Is cash on delivery necessary in Jordan?
Yes, in most categories. Jordanian buyers prefer it, especially on a first order, but every order must be confirmed on WhatsApp before shipping and a clear fee set to reduce returns.
How do I accept CliQ in a Shopify store?
Through a custom payment app that shows the store's CliQ alias to the customer and matches the transfer to the order automatically, or manually with payment instructions on the order page. We developed a custom CliQ app for Xmart integrated with Bank al Etihad.
Which delivery companies suit online stores in Jordan?
Local companies that specialise in eCommerce delivery and collect cash on delivery, plus the large carriers for international shipping. Choose one that integrates with the store and remits collected amounts regularly.
Can a Jordanian store sell to the Gulf?
Yes, through Shopify Markets with currency, pricing and shipping zones per country, provided customs fees and delivery time are clear to the customer. Light products with a healthy margin suit this model.
