WhatsApp Abandoned Cart Recovery for Shopify: Timing and Messages
A practical guide to WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery for Shopify: the three-message sequence, timing, discount logic, consent, templates and measuring recovery.

WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery means sending an automatic reminder to a customer who added products to their cart in your Shopify store and left before paying, through the channel they open dozens of times a day. The idea is simple, but the difference between a sequence that recovers real orders and one that annoys customers lies in timing, discount logic and consent. This guide explains the sequence we use with Gulf stores, gives Arabic-ready message templates, and shows how to measure the result in store numbers rather than app numbers.
Why carts are abandoned before you try to recover them
Before you build any message sequence, ask why the customer leaves. In Gulf markets the same causes repeat: shipping costs appearing for the first time at checkout, no cash on delivery or no local payment method the customer trusts, being asked to create an account before buying, or simply a phone call that interrupted the purchase. Automation handles the last cause well, but it cannot fix a flawed checkout. That is why we recommend reading our article on reducing cart abandonment in Gulf stores, fixing the structural causes first, and then switching on recovery to handle what remains.
Consent first: who are you allowed to message?
WhatsApp’s business policy requires user opt-in before a business sends marketing messages it initiates, and most countries in the region have passed personal data protection laws in recent years that treat marketing messages on a consent basis. In practice this means:
- A clear consent checkbox at checkout with wording such as “I agree to receive updates and offers on WhatsApp”.
- Storing that consent on the customer record in Shopify so the app checks it before every send.
- An opt-out option in every message, even if it is just the word “STOP”.
WhatsApp Pilot sends recovery messages only to customers who agreed to WhatsApp marketing in the store, and that is the behaviour we recommend whatever app you use. The legal and operational details are in WhatsApp marketing consent rules for stores.
The three-message sequence: timing and purpose
The sequence we rely on has three messages, each with a different job. The table summarises it:
| Message | Approximate timing | Purpose | Discount? |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Within the first hour after abandonment | Friendly reminder with a link back to the cart | No |
| Second | About 24 hours later | Handle an objection: shipping, cash on delivery, warranty, questions | No, or free shipping if you already offer it |
| Third | About 48 to 72 hours later | A final, time-limited incentive | Yes, a unique code with a short validity |
Why this order? The first message recovers people who forgot or got busy, and they do not need a discount. The second recovers people who hesitated for a reason that information can resolve. Only the third speaks to people waiting for a better price. If you lead with a discount, you give it to customers who would have paid full price, and you teach everyone that abandoning a cart earns a code.
Adjusting timing by product
Cheap, consumable products tolerate a faster sequence because the decision is short. Expensive products such as appliances or original perfumes need a longer thinking period, so the third message can move to day four. During Ramadan, respect activity hours: messages after iftar are opened far more than midday messages.
Discount logic: how much, when and for whom
A discount in a recovery message is a tool, not a habit. Three rules we keep:
- Discount from a calculated margin. Work out the order’s contribution (price minus cost, shipping and fees) and make sure the discount does not turn the order into a loss. A small discount on a thin-margin product is worse than no recovery at all.
- A unique code per customer. A shared code spreads through group chats within hours. A unique code tied to the cart is used once and can be tracked. WhatsApp Pilot generates a unique discount code automatically inside the recovery sequence.
- Short validity. 24 to 48 hours. A long validity removes the incentive.
Alternatives to a discount that work well in the Gulf: free shipping if your store already offers it above a threshold, a small gift with the order, or a reminder that stock is limited when that is actually true. Never claim scarcity that does not exist.
Ready-to-edit message templates
The right tone for a Gulf customer is friendly and brief, without pressure or an excess of emojis. Replace the curly-bracket fields with your app’s variables. These work in Arabic or English; most Gulf stores send in the customer’s checkout language.
First message (reminder): “Hi {name}, we noticed you left {product name} in your cart at {store name}. Your cart is saved and you can complete your order here: {cart link}. If you have any question, we are here.”
Second message (objection handler): “Hi {name}, {product name} is still waiting for you. We deliver to {city/country} within {delivery time}, and cash on delivery is available. Complete your order: {cart link}.”
Third message (final incentive): “{name}, this code is yours: {code} gives you {discount value} on your cart, valid until {date}. Complete your order now: {cart link}.”
You will find twenty more templates for confirmations, shipping, reviews and seasonal greetings in WhatsApp message templates for stores.
Technical setup in Shopify
The practical steps to run WhatsApp recovery in a Shopify store:
- Enable the WhatsApp marketing consent checkbox at checkout, or in the form that collects the phone number.
- Install a recovery app that connects your number to the store. With WhatsApp Pilot the connection is made by scanning a QR code as a linked device, with no WhatsApp Business API required; details at whatsapppilot.esafqa.com.
- Configure the three messages, their timing and language (Arabic or English based on the customer).
- Test the sequence with a real cart from your own number before enabling it for everyone.
- Review the message log weekly to confirm delivery and replies.
The full walkthrough for connecting the number and settings is in connecting WhatsApp to a Shopify store.
Measuring the recovery rate properly
The common mistake is to trust the app dashboard’s “recovered orders” counter. The honest metric starts from the store:
- Recovery rate = completed orders that used the recovery code or came from the message link ÷ abandoned carts that received messages.
- Discount impact = average value of a recovered order after discount compared with an ordinary order.
- Cancellations. Track recovered cash-on-delivery orders that were later cancelled; a recovery that ends in a cancellation is not a recovery.
Compare numbers monthly, and judge any change (timing, copy, discount) after at least two weeks per test, changing one element at a time.
From our experience
With Sophie’s, a skincare store with more than 4,000 published products, we run regular cart and checkout audits and pricing studies, because every checkout improvement lifts the result of every recovery message sent afterwards. WhatsApp recovery performs best when checkout has been fixed first: local payment methods, shipping costs shown before the payment step, and fast loading on mobile. You can read the Sophie’s case study, and see what our conversion rate optimisation service covers in auditing the journey from ad to checkout.
Conclusion
WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery is profitable when it is built on clear consent, a three-message sequence with distinct goals, a calculated discount in the last message only, and measurement from store orders rather than an app counter. Fix checkout first, then enable the sequence, test it on yourself, and review results monthly. Frequently asked questions
When should the first abandoned cart message be sent?
In our experience, within the first hour after abandonment, after a short delay that lets the customer finish on their own. The first message is a reminder only, with no discount, because many customers left because they were busy, not because of the price.
Can I message everyone who abandons a cart?
No. Messages go only to customers who agreed to receive WhatsApp marketing from the store, usually through a checkbox at checkout. WhatsApp Pilot sends recovery messages only to customers who opted in.
Should every recovery message include a discount code?
No. We prefer the discount in the third message only, with a short validity, and a unique code per customer so it does not spread and get used by people it was not meant for.
How do I calculate the cart recovery rate?
Completed orders that used the recovery code or came from the message link, divided by the number of abandoned carts that received messages. Compare monthly and never judge from a single week.
