Reduce Cart Abandonment in Gulf Stores: Causes and Practical Fixes

How to reduce cart abandonment in Gulf stores: late shipping costs, cash on delivery, OTP failures, Shopify checkout settings and WhatsApp recovery that works.

Author: Mousa Alhelo · Published · 6 min read

Cart abandonment is the biggest leak in an online store’s funnel: a customer whose ad you paid for, who liked the product and added it to the cart, then left before paying. In Saudi Arabia, the Gulf and Jordan this leak has specific causes that differ from Western markets: shipping costs that appear late, no cash on delivery or mada, failed OTP codes, and the need to ask on WhatsApp before paying. This article explains the causes in order of how often we find them in audits, the Shopify settings that reduce them, and how to recover part of the carts you lose.

Where abandonment actually happens: cart or checkout?

Before the fixes, locate the problem. Shopify and GA4 reports give you three rates: product page to cart, cart to checkout started, and checkout started to purchase. Each stage has its own causes:

Stage Most common cause First fix
Cart → checkout started Unexpected shipping cost, or the cart used as a wishlist Show shipping on the product page and enable continuous shopping
Checkout → shipping info Forced account creation or too many fields Guest checkout and fewer fields
Shipping → payment Expensive or slow shipping options Free-shipping threshold and an express option
Payment → purchase Missing preferred payment method or OTP failure mada, Apple Pay, BNPL and cash on delivery

Cause one: shipping costs and fees that appear late

A customer who sees 150 in the ad and then discovers 30 for shipping at checkout feels misled, even when the shipping is reasonable. The fix is not to remove shipping but to show it early: delivery time and cost to the main cities on the product page, and a visible free-shipping threshold in the cart (“add 50 more for free shipping”). The threshold raises average order value and reduces abandonment at the same time. See product page conversion optimization for where to place this information.

Cause two: the preferred payment method is missing

In Saudi Arabia the customer expects mada and Apple Pay; in the UAE, cards and Apple Pay; across the Gulf, instalments through Tabby or Tamara; in Jordan, CliQ and cash on delivery. If any is missing, a segment of customers leaves at the last step. Enable a licensed local gateway that supports these methods, and see Shopify payment gateways for Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Cause three: cash on delivery and trust

Cash on delivery has two faces: offering it reduces abandonment because a large segment does not trust prepaying at a new store, but it raises the share of orders refused at the door. The balance we apply: offer it with a small fee waived for prepayment, confirm the order over WhatsApp within minutes of placement, and cancel orders that are not confirmed before shipping. Cause four: OTP codes and failed payments

A share of card payments fails because the bank’s OTP message arrives late, expires or is entered wrongly, and the customer leaves frustrated. The fixes: Apple Pay bypasses OTP in many cases, a clear retry path, and an immediate WhatsApp message on payment failure offering help or cash on delivery as an alternative.

Cause five: a long or slow checkout

Every extra field costs you customers. The Shopify settings we recommend:

  1. Guest checkout enabled, with optional account creation after purchase.
  2. Mobile number as the primary contact instead of email, because Gulf customers check WhatsApp, not their inbox.
  3. Address fields shortened to fit Gulf cities, with district and a map link as optional fields.
  4. Express checkout (Shop Pay and Apple Pay) visible at the top of the page.
  5. Order summary and total shipping clear before the pay button.
  6. A fast page on mobile; any app injecting scripts into checkout slows it down.

Cause six: the customer wants to ask first

In our markets, part of cart abandonment is not rejection but a pause: the customer wants to confirm the size, delivery time or authenticity before paying. A visible WhatsApp button in the cart and at checkout with a fast reply turns that pause into an order. The key is replying in minutes, not hours, because the customer is asking three stores at the same time.

Recovering abandoned carts: WhatsApp and email

However good the page, some carts will be abandoned, and that is where recovery comes in:

  • WhatsApp: the channel with the highest open rate in the Gulf. WhatsApp Pilot sends three scheduled messages to customers who agreed to marketing messages, with a unique discount code in the last one, shows a message log and a results dashboard, and connects by scanning a QR code with no WhatsApp Business API. Details at whatsapppilot.esafqa.com. The full sequence is in WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery.
  • Email: Shopify’s automatic abandoned checkout emails work as a second layer, especially for customers who entered an email.
  • Retargeting: dynamic catalogue campaigns on Meta show the same product to those who left it, but they cost money, unlike messages.

The recovery rule: the first message is a polite reminder with no discount, the second answers common questions (shipping and returns), and only the third carries a time-limited discount. Starting with a discount teaches customers to abandon on purpose.

How to measure the result

Metric Source Target
Reached checkout rate Shopify: cart ÷ checkout started Gradual increase
Checkout completion rate Shopify: purchase ÷ checkout started Increase after each change
Recovered order share WhatsApp Pilot and email reports Monthly follow-up
Cash-on-delivery refusal rate Shopify and the courier Decrease with pre-confirmation

Change one element at a time and wait at least two weeks before judging, because weekdays and seasons change behaviour.

From our experience

At Sophie’s, a beauty store in Jordan with more than 4,000 products, we run regular cart and checkout audits and pricing studies as part of account management, because every improvement in checkout completion lowers the cost of acquisition on the same ad spend. The recurring lesson in every audit: the problem is rarely the ad, and usually a late shipping detail or a missing payment method. Read the Sophie’s case study.

Conclusion

Cart abandonment in the Gulf has causes you can fix: show shipping early, offer every expected payment method, shorten checkout, make it easy to ask on WhatsApp, then recover what remains with scheduled messages that start with a reminder and end with a discount. Measure checkout completion before and after every change. For a complete cart and checkout audit in your store’s numbers, see E-SAFQA’s conversion rate optimisation service.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal cart abandonment rate?

Industry studies globally show that most carts are abandoned before purchase, and in cash-on-delivery markets the rate can be higher. What matters is measuring your own rate in Shopify reports and improving it month after month.

Why do customers abandon specifically at checkout?

Usually because of a shipping cost or fee that did not appear earlier, a missing preferred payment method, a forced account creation, a failed bank OTP code, or a slow page on mobile.

Can abandoned carts be recovered over WhatsApp?

Yes, provided the customer agreed to marketing messages. WhatsApp Pilot sends three scheduled messages with a unique discount code to customers who opted in, and shows a message log with results.

Does cash on delivery increase or reduce cart abandonment?

Offering it reduces abandonment because it is the preferred option for a segment of customers, but it raises the share of orders refused at the door. The fix is to offer it with a small fee and confirm the order over WhatsApp before shipping.
