What Is a Shopify Partner Agency and How to Verify One

What a Shopify Partner agency is, how to verify one in the official Partner Directory, the questions to ask, the red flags, and why it matters in the Gulf.

A Shopify Partner is a member of Shopify’s official Partner Program, the program through which Shopify manages its relationship with agencies, developers and app and theme builders. What matters most for a merchant is that agencies that pass Shopify’s review are listed in the official Partner Directory as Service Partners, and anyone can verify that listing. This article explains what the title means and what it does not, how to verify an agency, which questions to ask, and which red flags call for caution, especially for Gulf merchants.

What is the Shopify Partner Program?

The Shopify Partner Program is open and free to anyone who builds stores, apps or themes on the platform. A member gets a partner dashboard to create development stores for building and testing before handover, request access to client stores, publish apps on the Shopify App Store, and reach educational and technical resources.

There is an important distinction every merchant should know:

Level What it means How to verify
Partner Program member Registered in the program for free No public way to verify
Service Partner listed in the directory Passed Shopify’s review and submitted documented work Search the name in the official Partner Directory
Developer of published apps Published an app that passed App Store review Search for the app on the Shopify App Store
Shopify Plus Partner A higher tier for working with Plus stores Appears in the directory with a Plus badge

The lesson: the phrase “Shopify Partner” on an agency’s website can mean any of these levels, and the directory check is what settles it.

How to verify an agency in the Shopify Partner Directory

  1. Open the official Partner Directory from Shopify’s website.
  2. Search by the agency’s name or filter by service and location.
  3. Open the agency’s profile and review the listed services, showcased work and merchant reviews where available.
  4. Ask the agency for a direct link to its profile; a listed agency provides it without hesitation.

We have been listed in the official directory as a Service Partner since 2025, and we publish two apps on the Shopify App Store: Sale Scheduler by SalePilot (salepilot.esafqa.com) and WhatsApp Pilot (whatsapppilot.esafqa.com). This is the kind of evidence we advise merchants to request from any provider.

How a partner works on your store without owning it

This is a core safety point. The partner does not need your password and does not create the store on their personal account so that it stays tied to them. The correct method is collaborator access: the partner sends a request from the partner dashboard, you approve it from your store’s user settings with the permissions you define (themes, products, settings and so on), and you can revoke it at any moment. If the partner builds the store as a development store, they transfer ownership to you at launch. We explain permissions and accounts in Shopify login and account management.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Are you listed in the official Partner Directory? Send the link.
  • Who will own the store, domain and apps after handover? (The only acceptable answer: me.)
  • How will you install Meta Pixel, Conversions API, GA4 and Merchant Center, and how do I verify they work?
  • Which payment gateway do you suggest for my market and why? Have you connected mada, KNET or CliQ before?
  • Will the store be fully Arabic or bilingual, and which theme and why?
  • What exactly does the deliverable include: number of products, pages, training, support period?
  • Show me two stores similar to my catalog size and market, not just a portfolio page.
  • What happens after launch: who reviews speed, tracking and the first ad campaign?

Good answers to these questions separate an experienced partner from a front-end designer. The broader criteria for choosing an agency are in how to choose an ecommerce agency in the Gulf.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed results or sales: nobody guarantees sales; a serious partner talks about order economics and testing periods.
  • The store on the agency’s account without a clear ownership transfer: you may find yourself hostage in a dispute.
  • A very low price with no written scope: usually means a ready theme with no localisation or tracking.
  • No mention of tracking: a store without Pixel and GA4 starts advertising blind.
  • No knowledge of local payments: if they have not heard of mada, KNET or cash on delivery, they are not a partner for your market.
  • Refusal to provide references you can talk to.

Why this matters for Gulf merchants specifically

Because the difference between a store that displays and a store that sells in our markets lies in local details: a theme prepared for Arabic, a licensed gateway supporting mada and Apple Pay, shipping with correct zones, cash on delivery wisely restricted, and complete tracking so Meta and Google ads work from day one. A partner that built stores in distant markets may not know these details, and an unlisted local provider may not follow Shopify’s standards. What you need is both: the listing and the regional experience. Start by understanding the platform in what is Shopify, then evaluate the partner against the Shopify store launch checklist item by item.

What to expect from a good partner after handover

Handover is not the end of the relationship. A good partner trains your team to manage the store, reviews tracking after the first real orders, proposes a plan for the first ad campaign built on profit margin, and stays available for a defined support period. These elements are part of our Shopify store development service, because a store that is delivered and then abandoned rarely reaches profitability.

From our experience: Qattan Global, a perfume and beauty distributor with no digital presence, needed a Shopify store with a catalog of more than 5,000 products and a corporate website. Both launched within 60 days, and the partnership continued with content and ads. A written timeline and full ownership transfer to the client are what make such a project possible, and they are what you should demand from any partner.

Conclusion

Shopify Partner is a title to verify, not to take on faith: search the official Partner Directory, ask for evidence of work and apps, make sure you will own your store, domain and data, and that tracking and local payments are part of the written scope. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Shopify Partner and a Shopify Expert?

The program today is called the Shopify Partner Program, and agencies listed in the Partner Directory appear as Service Partners. Shopify Experts was the former name of the directory and is still used in everyday speech.

How do I verify that an agency is really a Shopify Partner?

Search for the agency's name in Shopify's official Partner Directory on Shopify's website. If its profile appears there with services and work, it is a listed and reviewed Service Partner. A logo on the agency's own site is not enough.

Does the partner need my account password?

Never. The partner requests collaborator access from their partner dashboard, you approve it from your store's user settings with permissions you define, and you can revoke it at any time.

Do I pay more when working with a Shopify Partner?

Partner pricing varies by agency and scope, and Shopify sets no standard rate. What the listing guarantees is that Shopify has reviewed the agency and it has documented work, not a higher or lower price.

Can the partner create the store on my behalf?

Yes. A partner can create a development store, build it and transfer ownership to you at launch, or work directly on a store you create. In both cases you must be the owner at handover.
