Shopify vs Magento: Which Is Better for Your Store?

Shopify vs Magento on total cost of ownership, maintenance, security, speed and B2B features, plus when Magento still makes sense, from a Gulf and Jordan view.

Author: Mousa Alhelo · Published · 6 min read

Shopify vs Magento comes down to one question: do you want a hosted platform that handles security, updates and speed and leaves you to sell, or a platform whose code you fully own and run with your own team? Shopify is the first; Magento (Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce) is the second. For most retail stores in the Gulf, Jordan and Iraq the balance tips toward Shopify on total cost, speed and ease of management, while Magento remains the right choice for businesses with a technical team and customisation needs that apps cannot cover.

The core difference: hosted or owned?

Shopify is a SaaS platform: you pay a monthly subscription and get hosting, security, SSL, updates, backups and a CDN as part of the service. You do not own the code, but you do not maintain it either. Magento is an open-source platform installed on a server you choose: you own everything and you are responsible for everything, from version upgrades to patching vulnerabilities.

That difference drives everything that follows: cost, maintenance, speed, security and who you need on your team.

Full comparison of the two platforms

Criterion Shopify Magento
Platform model Hosted (SaaS) Open source on your own server
Hosting and security Included in the subscription Your responsibility or your host’s
Updates Automatic Manual, needing a developer for each upgrade
Mobile speed Ready with a global CDN Depends on server and caching work
Customisation Theme, apps and API Unlimited at code level
Apps and extensions Large app store reviewed by the platform Large extension market of varying quality
Team required A merchant or marketer runs the store A Magento developer on call
B2B B2B features on higher plans and apps Strong B2B features, especially in Adobe Commerce
Regional payments and shipping Local gateways and courier apps ready Depends on extensions and custom integration
Total cost for a retail store Usually lower Usually higher due to maintenance

Total cost of ownership: beyond the licence

The most common mistake in comparing the two is comparing a subscription price with a licence price. Magento Open Source has no licence fee, but the real cost spreads across:

  • Hosting with enough resources for a store with thousands of products, plus caching and search services.
  • A developer: a monthly salary or maintenance contract to apply updates and fix conflicts after every upgrade.
  • Paid extensions and their annual licence renewals.
  • Security: vulnerability monitoring, incident handling and payment compliance.
  • Time: your team’s hours spent on maintenance instead of marketing.

With Shopify the cost is clearer: a monthly subscription by plan, payment processing fees and the app subscriptions you choose. How to estimate the full cost of a store in our region is covered in the cost of building an online store in the Gulf. The rule: compare three years of cost, not one month.

Maintenance and security: who watches the store?

On Magento every security patch is an official announcement you must apply quickly, and every version upgrade can break an extension or a theme. Stores still on Magento 1 have had no official security updates since 2020, which is not a position a store holding customer data and taking payments should be in. On Shopify, updates, security and payment compliance are part of the platform, and the merchant does not need to know about them at all. That alone is reason enough for many merchants in the region who struggle to keep a Magento developer for years.

Speed: ready-made or engineered?

Mobile is where most store traffic in the Gulf, Jordan and Iraq comes from, and mobile speed affects conversion and ad costs directly. Shopify ships with a global CDN and an infrastructure tuned for speed, leaving the merchant to manage only the theme, apps and images. Magento can be very fast, but that is the result of continuous engineering on the server, caching and database, and it degrades when that work stops.

Customisation and B2B: where Magento wins

Fairness is required here. Magento lets you change anything at code level: complex pricing logic, catalogs with non-standard relationships, deep ERP integrations and unconventional buying experiences. Adobe Commerce offers advanced B2B features out of the box: shared catalogs, company-specific pricing, quote requests and approval workflows.

Shopify covers most common B2B needs (customer-specific pricing, minimum quantities, payment terms, company accounts) through B2B features on its higher plans and through apps, but non-standard requirements may need a custom app. So we never decide in general terms; we review the requirements list item by item.

When Magento remains the right choice

  • You have an in-house technical team that knows Magento and will stay with you.
  • Your pricing or catalog logic cannot be represented by Shopify’s options or apps.
  • ERP and multi-warehouse integrations follow rules that ready-made connectors do not cover.
  • Advanced B2B requirements depend specifically on Adobe Commerce features.
  • Company policy requires full ownership of code and data on your own servers.

If none of these apply, Shopify most likely gives you a faster store that is cheaper to maintain and easier to market. From our experience

Toolmart, Iraq’s largest industrial tools store, was a B2B and B2C store on Magento with more than 35,000 products from 65 suppliers, needing a faster platform and organic and paid growth. We moved it from Magento 2 to Shopify with a custom theme, then managed SEO and campaigns on Meta, Google and LinkedIn for B2B over several years; the result was more than $6 million in revenue in two years and organic traffic up by more than 1000%. Luliz moved from a slow, expensive-to-maintain Magento store to Shopify in summer 2025 without losing a product or a ranking. In both cases, size was never the obstacle; maintenance and speed were.

Conclusion

Shopify and Magento are both serious platforms, but for different businesses: Shopify for those who want to sell and market without running infrastructure, Magento for those with a technical team and customisation needs that apps cannot cover. Compare total cost over three years, review B2B and integration requirements line by line, then decide. Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify suitable for large stores like Magento is?

Yes. Shopify runs catalogs with tens of thousands of products, and we have migrated a store with more than 35,000 products to it. The difference lies in how you customise, not in how large you can grow.

What is the real cost of Magento compared with Shopify?

Magento Open Source has no licence fee, but the real cost sits in hosting, a developer, security updates and paid extensions. Shopify is a monthly subscription that includes hosting and security, plus apps and payment processing fees.

When does Magento remain the better choice?

When the business has an in-house technical team, needs deep customisation of pricing or catalog logic or complex ERP integrations, or has B2B rules that Shopify apps do not cover.

Do I lose B2B features when moving from Magento to Shopify?

Most common B2B needs such as customer-specific pricing, minimum quantities and company orders are covered in Shopify through B2B features on higher plans or apps. Each requirement is reviewed individually before deciding.
