Migrate Magento to Shopify: A Complete Playbook

Migrate Magento to Shopify without losing products, customers, orders or Google rankings: data freeze, clean import, 301 redirects and a zero-downtime switch.

Migrating Magento to Shopify is not a one-day export-and-import job. It is a four-phase project: audit and data freeze, transfer of products, customers and orders, URL rebuild with 301 redirects, and a DNS switch at a quiet hour after payments, shipping and tracking have been tested. Run in that order, the old store keeps selling until the last minute and you lose neither products nor Google rankings.

Why stores leave Magento for Shopify

Magento is a capable platform, but it is a platform you own and operate yourself: hosting, security patches, extensions that must stay compatible with every release, and a developer on call. The merchants who come to us from Magento rarely complain about what the platform can do. They complain about three specific things:

  • Ongoing maintenance cost. Every security patch or version upgrade is paid developer time, and in the Gulf, Jordan and Iraq it is hard to keep the same Magento developer for years.
  • Speed. Large Magento stores need careful server and caching work to stay fast on mobile, and mobile is where most traffic in the region comes from.
  • Magento 1 end of life. Stores still on the first version have had no official security updates since 2020, which is a real risk for payment and customer data.

Shopify takes over hosting, security and updates and leaves the merchant with products and marketing. If you are still weighing the decision, read Shopify vs Magento first.

What moves from Magento and what does not

The first question every merchant asks is whether everything will carry over. The honest answer: everything with commercial value moves, but not everything moves in the same shape.

Magento element What happens in Shopify
Simple and configurable products Imported as products with variants, up to three options per product
Bundle and grouped products Need redesign: a bundle app or separate products
Attributes Mapped to metafields or tags depending on how they are used
Categories Become collections, manual or automated by conditions
Customers Profiles and addresses move; passwords do not
Orders Imported as historical records via an import tool or API
URLs Structure changes, so a 301 redirect is built for every URL
Custom extensions Replaced by native features, apps or a custom app

The most important row is URLs. Shopify’s structure is fixed (/products/, /collections/, /pages/) while Magento allows any path, so there is no way around building a complete URL map.

Phase one: audit and data freeze

Before any data moves, the audit answers concrete questions. How many products are actually active? How many have no image or no price? Which extensions does daily selling depend on (payments, shipping, invoicing, ERP integration)? Which pages bring most of the organic traffic from Google?

Then comes the data freeze: a date after which nobody edits products in Magento, so a single final version is transferred to Shopify. New orders and customers keep flowing into Magento, and the last batch is moved on switch day. Without a freeze you end up migrating twice and hunting for differences by hand. We detail this phase in the eCommerce migration checklist.

Phase two: products, customers and orders

Products

Products are exported from Magento to a file and cleaned before import: brand names unified, duplicates removed, options (colour, size, volume) restructured so no product exceeds three options, and images linked to URLs Shopify can fetch. For large catalogs we use a specialised import tool rather than the basic CSV, because it handles metafields, redirects and orders in one workflow. Full guidance in bulk import products to Shopify.

Customers

Customer records, addresses and marketing consent status move across, but passwords never migrate from any platform to Shopify because they are hashed. The fix is to send account activation invites after launch, or to rely on Shopify’s new customer accounts, which log customers in with an emailed code and no password at all.

Orders

Shopify’s native CSV importer does not take order history, but specialised tools and the API import orders as historical records that appear on each customer’s page. That history matters for returns, for customer service and for building repeat-customer segments later. See migrating customers and order history for consent and invite details.

Phase three: URLs, 301 redirects and SEO

This is where Google rankings are won or lost. The steps we never skip:

  1. Export every Magento URL (products, categories, CMS pages, blog posts) from the sitemap and from Search Console.
  2. Build a table mapping each old URL to its new Shopify URL.
  3. Bulk import the redirects into Shopify’s URL redirects tool.
  4. Carry over page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text.
  5. After launch, submit the new sitemap to Search Console and watch 404 errors for 90 days.

We wrote a dedicated guide: keep SEO rankings when migrating to Shopify.

Phase four: payments, shipping and tracking

A store that moves with only its products is not ready to sell. Before the switch we reconnect:

  • Payment gateways: local providers, cards and cash on delivery, each verified with a real test order.
  • Shipping: zones, rates and couriers, especially cash-on-delivery rules that Gulf markets need.
  • Tracking: Meta Pixel with the Conversions API, GA4, Merchant Center and Search Console, all connected to the new store before launch so campaign data never breaks.

Switch day: moving without downtime

We pick a quiet window (usually a mid-week night), then: move the final batch of orders and customers, put Magento into maintenance mode, point DNS to Shopify, confirm the SSL certificate, and place a full test order with a real payment. The Magento store stays alive on a temporary address for weeks as a rollback plan and is only shut down once Search Console and campaign reports have settled.

From our experience: Luliz and Toolmart

We moved the Luliz beauty store from Magento to Shopify in summer 2025: thousands of products from brands like Inglot and Guerlain, full order and customer history, a URL rebuild with 301 redirects, then Merchant Center, GA4 and the Pixel reconnected. The result was zero lost products, no lost rankings, and campaigns running profitably since launch.

Toolmart, Iraq’s largest industrial tools store, moved from Magento 2 to Shopify with a custom theme and more than 35,000 products from 65 suppliers; organic traffic later grew by more than 1000% with ongoing SEO and ads management. The shared lesson: a large catalog is not an obstacle to migration. Planning is what makes the difference.

If your store runs on WordPress rather than Magento, the logic is the same with different tools, covered in migrate WooCommerce to Shopify.

Conclusion

A Magento to Shopify migration succeeds when it is managed as a project: audit and freeze, cleaned data transfer, a complete URL map with 301 redirects, payment, shipping and tracking tests, then a quiet-hour switch with a rollback plan. That is exactly what E-SAFQA’s Shopify migration service delivers as a Shopify Partner.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

It depends on catalog size and the number of customisations. A store with thousands of products and full order history usually needs weeks rather than days, because cleaning, testing and URL redirects take longer than the transfer itself.

Will my store go offline during the migration?

Not if the new store is built in parallel. Magento keeps running until testing is complete, then the domain is switched at a quiet hour so sales never stop.

Will I lose Google rankings after moving to Shopify?

Not if the URL structure is preserved where possible, every old page gets a 301 redirect, the new sitemap is submitted and Search Console is monitored after launch.

Can old orders be moved from Magento to Shopify?

Yes. Orders are imported as historical records through a specialised import tool or the API, so each customer's history stays visible to you and your support team.

What happens to my custom Magento extensions?

Each one is reviewed: some are replaced by a native Shopify feature, some by an App Store app, and the few that are essential to the business are rebuilt as a custom app.
