Psychological Pricing for eCommerce in Arabic Markets: What Works
Psychological pricing for eCommerce in Gulf and Arabic markets: .99 endings in SAR, AED and JOD, anchors, bundles, free shipping thresholds and what we saw in our stores.

Psychological pricing for eCommerce is a set of rules that change how a customer perceives a price without necessarily changing what the store earns: price endings, anchors, option ordering, bundles and the free shipping threshold. This guide explains each tool, when it works in Arabic markets priced in riyals, dirhams and dinars, and what we have observed in stores we manage, with one constant warning: every rule here is a hypothesis to be tested with numbers in your own store.
Rule one: economics before psychology
Before any talk of .99 or anchors, you need to know what a single order earns: the price minus product cost, shipping, payment gateway fees, average discount and returns. That figure is the contribution margin, and it defines the most you can spend on ads to acquire the order. Psychological pricing works inside that frame; it cannot rescue a base price that loses money from the start. The full calculation is in our guide to eCommerce unit economics and contribution margin.
The common mistake is starting from a competitor’s price and then looking for tricks to justify it. The right order is: start from your margin, decide your position in the market, then choose how the price is presented.
Price endings: .99, .95 or a whole number?
| Ending | Impression it gives | Suits | Does not suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| .99 or .95 | A deal, a price calculated downwards | Electronics accessories, daily essentials, traffic products | Premium products, high-end gifts |
| .90 or .50 | Between a deal and a clean price | Clothing, mid-priced cosmetics | Electronics compared riyal by riyal |
| Whole number (150, 200) | Quality, trust, simplicity | Original perfumes, watches, large appliances, services | Products where the customer hunts for the lowest price |
A note on currencies. In Saudi riyals and UAE dirhams, the difference between 199 and 200 is read as a change in the leading digit (one hundred-something versus two hundred), which is the documented left-digit effect. In Jordanian dinars, where the unit is large, endings such as 9.90 and 14.50 feel more natural than 9.99 because the last fils is not really read. In Kuwait and Bahrain, where the dinar is high-value and many prices show three decimals, pick a clean ending such as 4.750 rather than 4.999.
More important than the ending is consistency. A store that mixes 79.99, 80 and 80.5 in the same collection looks careless. Apply one rounding rule per collection, which can be done in bulk as described in bulk editing prices in Shopify safely.
Anchors: the reference price the customer measures against
Customers never evaluate a price in isolation. The reference is either the struck-through price (compare-at price), the most expensive option on the same page, or the competitor price they carry in their head. Three ways to use an anchor honestly:
- A genuine struck-through price: works in sales seasons provided it is a real previous price; otherwise it breaks consumer-protection rules, as covered in compare-at price strategy for Shopify.
- A premium option at the top: showing the large size or the full set first makes the medium option look reasonable.
- Unit price: showing the price per millilitre for perfumes or per piece for bundles makes the larger bundle look like the smarter choice.
A false anchor works once and then destroys trust. An honest anchor works every time.
Option ordering and the middle effect
When you present three sizes or three bundles, many customers gravitate to the middle option, especially when the gap to the top option is relatively small and the gap in value to the bottom option is large. That means the design of the options matters as much as the price itself:
- The lowest option: a clear entry point with the fewest benefits.
- The middle option: what you want most customers to buy, with the best visible value.
- The top option: an anchor that lifts the value of the middle, and some customers do buy it.
In Shopify this can be done with product variants (50 ml, 100 ml, set) or separate bundle products. Watch the sales split across options after two weeks; if everyone buys the lowest, the differences are not convincing.
Bundles: the strongest tool for raising order value without cutting margin
A bundle sells three products at a price that looks lower than their sum, but it usually includes a high-margin item that offsets the gap, and it saves the shipping cost of two separate orders. The bundle types we see working in Arabic markets:
- The complete-routine bundle: cleanser, toner and moisturiser in skincare, or charger, cable and case in electronics.
- The gift-ready bundle: wrapping and a card with the product, important in Ramadan and Eid.
- Buy two, save on the third: works for consumables bought regularly.
A bundle is judged by the total contribution margin of the order, not by the discount percentage. More methods in increasing average order value on Shopify.
The free shipping threshold: the number that changes cart behaviour
“Free shipping on orders over 200 riyals” is one of the strongest messages in Gulf stores because shipping fees are the most cited reason for abandoning a cart. The rule: set the threshold slightly above your current average order value so the customer needs to add one small item to reach it, and make sure the margin of an order at the threshold actually covers the shipping cost. Then watch two numbers: average order value, and the share of orders above the threshold. Details in free shipping threshold strategy.
What we observed in stores we manage
These are qualitative observations from our work, not statistics, and they remain hypotheses to test in each store:
- In original perfume stores, clean whole-number prices convey authenticity, while .99 endings feel out of place for luxury brands.
- In electronics accessories, where customers compare prices quickly, .99 and .95 endings work naturally.
- For Noor Alhuda, a Palestinian embroidery store selling in US dollars to the USA, Canada and Australia, a pricing and shipping restructure raised average order value from $122 to $153 and improved MER by 30% within two weeks. The core of the change was that prices began to carry the acquisition cost and international shipping instead of being drained by them. Details in the Noor Alhuda case study.
- For Poshy, a Korean skincare store, we ran a pricing study and a conversion audit before launch rather than after, which is the order we recommend.
When you want to apply a rounding rule or reprice hundreds of products with a preview before publishing, SalePilot offers rounding to .99, .95 or .90 within its bulk edit, plus scheduling and automatic rollback for temporary offers. Details at salepilot.esafqa.com.
How to test a pricing rule without losing money
- Pick one collection, not the whole catalog.
- Record the baseline before the change: conversion rate, average order value and contribution margin over at least two weeks.
- Change one variable only (the ending, the bundle, or the threshold).
- Wait long enough to collect a reasonable number of orders, and review three numbers rather than one.
- Keep what worked and revert what did not, without hesitation.
Our conversion rate optimisation service always starts with this method: an audit of the product page, pricing and cart in the store’s own numbers, then a list of fixes ranked by impact.
Conclusion
Psychological pricing is a tool for improving how a price is perceived, not for compensating a price that loses money. Start from contribution margin, choose an ending that fits the product category and the currency, use an honest anchor, design options and bundles deliberately, and set the free shipping threshold by calculation rather than taste. Then test everything in your own store. If you would like a review of your price structure in its real numbers, message us on WhatsApp for a free audit.

Frequently asked questions
Does .99 pricing work in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf?
It works for products where customers compare prices and look for a deal, such as electronics accessories and daily essentials. For original perfumes and premium products, a clean whole-number price gives a better impression of quality. Test both in your store.
What is the difference between psychological pricing and discounting?
A discount actually lowers the price and the margin. Psychological pricing changes how the price is presented, how options are ordered and how bundles are built, without necessarily reducing margin, so it should be tried before resorting to discounts.
How do I set a free shipping threshold?
Start from your current average order value and set the threshold a little above it so the customer needs to add one more item, then confirm that the margin of an order at the threshold covers the shipping cost. Watch average order value and the share of orders above the threshold after the change.
Can psychological pricing be applied to thousands of products at once?
Yes, through rounding rules applied in a bulk edit, such as rounding every price to .99, .95 or the nearest whole number, with a preview before publishing so no odd prices slip through.
