Increase Average Order Value on Shopify: 7 Proven Methods
Seven proven ways to increase average order value on Shopify: bundles, free-shipping thresholds, upsells, tiered discounts and pricing, with a real example.

Increasing average order value is the lever that raises store profit without an extra dollar in advertising. Customer acquisition cost and shipping are roughly fixed per order, so when the average order rises from 200 to 260, contribution rises by more than the price increase. This article covers seven methods we apply to Shopify stores in the Gulf and Jordan, ordered from fastest to implement to deepest in impact, with a real repricing example from our work.
Why average order value matters more than cost per click
Many merchants chase a lower cost per click while leaving the easiest win on the table. Take a store where cost per order from ads is 40 and shipping is 20: an order of 200 leaves a certain margin, and an order of 260 with an added product leaves a much higher one, because the extra 60 carries no new shipping or acquisition cost. The full formula is in eCommerce unit economics.
| Metric | Before | After a 30% AOV increase |
|---|---|---|
| Average order | 200 | 260 |
| Acquisition and shipping per order | 60 | 60 |
| Product cost (45%) | 90 | 117 |
| Left for overheads and profit | 50 | 83 |
The numbers are illustrative, but the logic holds: most of the increase in average order goes to profit.
Method one: the free-shipping threshold
The fastest to implement and the highest impact in most stores. The rule: set the threshold about 20–30% above the current average order; if your average is 180, put free shipping at 220 or 230. Lower and you lose shipping revenue without a lift; much higher and customers do not try to reach it. Show a progress bar in the cart (“add 35 more for free shipping”) and suggest small products that close the gap. The calculation is in free shipping threshold strategy.
Method two: bundles
A bundle sells two or three products with one shipping cost and one acquisition cost. Bundles that work in our markets:
- Routine bundle: cleanser + toner + moisturiser in skincare, or perfume + body mist.
- Quantity bundle: 3 for the price of 2.5, suited to consumables (filters, lenses, supplements).
- Gift bundle: a wrapped set for Eid and Ramadan.
- Starter bundle: the main device with its essential accessories (cable, case).
Calculate the bundle discount on contribution margin, not on price: a 10% discount on a two-product bundle is still more profitable than selling one product at full price.
Method three: upsells and cross-sells
- On the product page: “frequently bought together” with two genuinely complementary products, below the add-to-cart button, not above it.
- In the cart: one relatively low-priced suggestion (under 25% of cart value) added in one click.
- Post-purchase: an offer after the thank-you page for a complementary product at a discount, added to the same order with no new payment.
- Upgrade: the larger size or higher version with a clear price difference (“the large size saves 15%”).
The common mistake is random suggestions based on best sellers, which feel like an ad rather than help. Improving the page for this purpose is covered in product page conversion optimization.
Method four: tiered discounts
“Spend 300 and get 10% off, spend 500 and get 15% off.” A tiered discount motivates the customer to push the cart to the next level, and works well in multi-product stores such as perfume, beauty and tools. Place the tiers above the current average order, as with the shipping threshold, and make the automatic discount visible in the cart with no code required.
Method five: pricing and compare-at price
Pricing itself is an AOV lever: anchoring products with a higher reference price makes the mid option look reasonable, and a genuine compare-at price justifies value. But fake discounts damage trust and breach consumer protection rules in the Gulf; see compare-at price strategy. With dozens or thousands of products, editing prices manually becomes a source of errors: SalePilot bulk-edits prices and compare-at prices by collection, tag or SKU, previews every change at variant level before publishing, and schedules start and end with automatic price rollback. Method six: a minimum order for cash on delivery
In stores suffering from small, refused cash-on-delivery orders, a reasonable minimum for this method (or a fee waived above a certain amount) raises average order value and reduces returns at the same time. Test it carefully and watch conversion rate so you do not lose serious customers.
Method seven: loyalty and repeat purchase
Points and second-order rewards do not raise a single order’s value directly, but they raise total customer value, which is what justifies a higher acquisition cost. Repeat-purchase offers over WhatsApp to opted-in customers are among the cheapest ways to achieve this.
Mistakes that lower average order value instead of raising it
- Discounts on everything, all the time: this teaches customers to wait and lowers both AOV and margin. Offers need a start and an end.
- A free-shipping threshold set too low: below the current average order, you give up shipping revenue for nothing.
- Suggestions competing with the buy button: upsell popups that appear before add to cart reduce conversion; show them after the add or after payment.
- Bundles that make no sense: grouping unrelated products just to raise the price convinces nobody.
- Manual price edits that are never reverted: a sale that ended weeks ago with prices still reduced eats margin silently.
- A discount in the first recovery message: it teaches customers to abandon carts on purpose and wait for the code.
How to start this week
- Pull the current average order value from Shopify reports for the last three months, by traffic source if possible.
- Set the free-shipping threshold 20–30% above the average and enable the progress bar in the cart.
- Pick your five best sellers and assign each one complementary product for “frequently bought together”.
- Design one bundle (routine or quantity) and calculate its discount on contribution margin.
- Watch AOV and conversion rate weekly for a month before the next step.
How to measure correctly
Track average order value and conversion rate together; raising the first at the expense of the second is a net loss. The right measure is revenue per visitor (conversion rate × AOV) and contribution per order. Apply one method, wait two to four weeks, and compare with the previous period and the same season. Remember that seasons raise AOV naturally, so do not attribute every increase to the change.
From our experience
Noor Alhuda, a Palestinian embroidery brand selling in US dollars to the United States, Canada and Australia, had pricing and shipping that could not carry international acquisition costs. We restructured pricing and shipping based on order economics, and average order value rose from 122 to 153 dollars while MER improved by 30% within two weeks, with no increase in ad spend. The change was in the equation, not the ads. Read the Noor Alhuda case study.
Conclusion
Increasing average order value starts with a well-placed free-shipping threshold, then complementary bundles and upsells, then tiered discounts and correct pricing, with tools that make price changes safe and reversible. Measure revenue per visitor, not AOV alone. For an audit of your customer journey and pricing in your store’s numbers, see E-SAFQA’s conversion rate optimisation service.

Frequently asked questions
What is average order value and how do I calculate it?
Average order value (AOV) is total sales divided by the number of orders in the same period. Shopify reports show it directly, and it is best tracked monthly and by traffic source.
What is the fastest way to increase average order value?
A free-shipping threshold set slightly above the current average order with a progress bar in the cart. It motivates the customer to add a small item to reach it, and takes an hour to set up in Shopify.
Do bundles reduce profit because of the discount?
Not if they are calculated on contribution margin. A bundle sells two products with one shipping cost and one acquisition cost, so even with a small discount the order profit is higher than selling one product.
How do I schedule bundle offers and tiered discounts safely?
Use a tool that previews every price change before publishing and restores prices automatically when the sale ends, such as SalePilot, instead of editing prices manually and forgetting to revert them.
