What Is Digital Marketing? A Practical Guide for Online Stores

Digital marketing is promoting and selling products through digital channels: search engines such as Google, social platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, content, email, WhatsApp and creators. What separates it from traditional marketing is that you can reach the people who actually want your product, and measure what every dollar or riyal returned, down to the order. This guide to digital marketing for eCommerce is written for online store owners, especially in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf and Jordan: the channels and the job of each, how they work together, how to measure results by orders and MER, and a starter plan for a small budget.

What is digital marketing? A working definition for store owners

Academic definitions are long. A store owner needs one they can act on: digital marketing is every digital activity that brings the right visitor to your store, persuades them to buy, and brings them back to buy again, at a cost below your margin. Three verbs: attract, convert, retain. Anything that serves none of them, however good it looks, is a cost, not marketing.

Digital marketing and eCommerce are often mentioned together because they are two sides of one business. eCommerce is the selling itself: the store, payment, shipping and customer service, explained in what is eCommerce. Digital marketing is what brings buyers to that store. A store with no marketing gets no visitors, and marketing that sends people to a weak product page or a slow store burns the budget.

You will also see “online marketing” and “internet marketing” used for the same thing. Some sources treat “digital” as slightly broader, covering every digital medium. The label matters less than knowing what sells for your store and at what cost.

Digital marketing vs traditional marketing

Traditional marketing (billboards, radio, print) still builds awareness for large brands. For a young or mid-sized online store, though, good digital marketing is usually the shorter path to profit, for the reasons in this table:

FactorTraditional marketingDigital marketing
TargetingBroad audience by medium and locationBy interest, behaviour, search intent and location
MeasurementMostly estimatedTrackable down to the order when tracking is set up properly
Starting spendAdvance bookings and large amounts, usuallyA daily budget that can start small and stop at any time
Speed of changeWeeksHours
Customer relationshipOne-way messageConversation: comments, DMs, WhatsApp, reviews
TestingHard and costlySeveral ads and offers tested in the same week

Comparison of traditional and digital marketing on targeting, measurement, starting spend, speed of change, customer relationship and testing Figure: how traditional and digital marketing differ for an online store.

One important warning: digital measurement is not 100% accurate. Privacy settings in browsers and phones, attribution windows and cancelled orders make platform numbers estimates. That is why, further down, we explain how to measure with your own store numbers.

Digital marketing channels and the job of each

You do not need every channel on day one. You need to understand each channel’s role in the customer journey, then choose what fits your product and budget.

SEO: free traffic that compounds

Search engine optimisation makes your store’s pages appear when customers search Google for a product or a question. You do not pay per click, but it takes months to build, and then it compounds. Today it also extends to AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. The basics are in what is SEO, and our service is SEO, AEO and GEO.

Google captures people who are searching for your product right now. Shopping ads show the product image and price and run on a product feed in Google Merchant Center, while Performance Max runs ads across Google’s networks. This is the channel closest to a “ready” order, because the buying intent already exists.

Social ads: Meta, Snapchat and TikTok

Social ads create demand among people who were not searching. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is the backbone for most stores thanks to catalog campaigns and retargeting; how to run it step by step is in our Facebook Ads Manager guide. Snapchat has a strong presence among audiences in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, and TikTok is strong at product discovery through short video.

Content and social media management

Organic content (reels, posts, buying guides, articles) builds trust, feeds your ads with ready material and answers customer questions before they are asked. More in content marketing for eCommerce and social media management for online stores.

Email and SMS

These are channels you own, where you do not pay for every impression. Welcome flows, abandoned cart, post-purchase and seasonal campaigns bring customers back at a low cost. On Shopify you can start with the Shopify Email app and grow from there.

WhatsApp

In the Gulf and Jordan, many customers prefer to ask on WhatsApp before they buy. Use it for fast replies, confirming cash-on-delivery orders and recovering abandoned carts, while respecting customer consent for marketing messages. Our app WhatsApp Pilot adds a WhatsApp button, order confirmations, cart recovery and back-in-stock alerts by scanning a QR code, with no WhatsApp Business API required; details at whatsapppilot.esafqa.com.

Creators and UGC

Content creators present your product in everyday language. A phone-shot video from someone who actually uses the product often persuades more than a studio shoot, and it can run as a paid ad with the creator’s permission.

Affiliate marketing

The store pays a commission on each order that comes through a partner’s link or code. The risk is low because you pay for results, but it needs a code per partner and follow-up on returned orders.

How the channels work together for an online store

Customers rarely buy from a single channel. Take a typical journey of a shopper in Riyadh: she sees a short video of your product on Snapchat and does not buy. Two days later she searches the product name on Google, sees a Shopping ad, visits the store, adds the product to her cart and gets distracted. A WhatsApp message reminds her of the cart, she asks about delivery time, and orders with cash on delivery. A month later an email shows her a complementary product and she orders again.

That journey passes through four stages, each with its own channels:

  1. Discovery: video on Meta, Snapchat or TikTok, creators, organic content.
  2. Consideration: a Google search, reviews, a clear product page, retargeting.
  3. Purchase: Shopping, catalog ads, a fast WhatsApp reply, the right payment methods such as cash on delivery.
  4. Repeat: email, WhatsApp with consent, offers for existing customers.

Funnel of the four stages of the customer journey, discovery, consideration, purchase and repeat, with the channels that work at each stage Figure: which digital marketing channels serve each stage of the journey.

The store itself is part of the marketing: page speed, clear price and shipping, images, reviews and an easy checkout. A great campaign that lands on a weak page loses money, which is why any product launch plan starts with the page before the ad, as in how to market a product online.

Notice also that every platform in that journey will see the order: Snapchat because she watched the ad, Google because she clicked Shopping, and perhaps Meta if she saw an ad along the way. This is where the measurement question begins.

How to measure digital marketing: orders, CPA, MER and AOV

Always start from your store’s numbers, not from platform dashboards. These five metrics are enough for most stores:

MetricHow it is calculatedWhat it tells you
Net ordersShopify orders minus cancelled, refused-on-delivery and returned ordersThe core truth
CPA (cost per acquisition)Total ad spend ÷ net ordersIs an order cheaper than your margin allows?
MER (marketing efficiency ratio)Net store sales ÷ total spend on all platformsProfitability of marketing as a whole
AOV (average order value)Net sales ÷ number of ordersHow much you can afford to pay for an order
Repeat purchase rateShare of customers who bought more than onceIs marketing building a customer base or buying one-off orders?

Work out your maximum cost per order before you spend

Maximum CPA = selling price after discount − payment fees − product cost − shipping. A hypothetical example: an order worth 250 riyals, product cost 100 riyals, shipping and payment fees 40 riyals. That leaves 110 riyals before advertising, which is the maximum. We usually target about 70% of it so the order keeps a real profit. The full method for tying budget to margin is in our ecommerce marketing plan template.

Why you should never add platform numbers together

Each platform counts purchases its own way, within its own attribution window: Meta credits orders to people who saw or clicked an ad within a set period, Google credits clicks, and Snapchat and TikTok do the same. In the journey above, three platforms might each claim the same order, so the sum of “platform purchases” ends up larger than your store’s orders. Platforms also count an order at the moment of purchase, even if it is later cancelled or refused on delivery. So:

  • Use each platform’s numbers for decisions inside that platform: which ad, audience or product works better.
  • Judge the profitability of marketing as a whole with MER and cost per order from store numbers.
  • Never add Meta, Google and Snapchat purchases together, and do not compare one platform’s ROAS with another’s as if they measured the same thing.

From our experience

At Xmart, an electronics store in Jordan, the channels worked as one system: on Meta a dynamic catalog, Advantage+ Shopping and retargeting; on Google, Shopping and Performance Max on a well-organised Merchant Center; plus monthly content and seasonal campaigns. The verdict came from the blended number: in September 2026 the blended MER exceeded 10x with hundreds of orders a month from Meta and Google together (Xmart case study). At Noor Alhuda Embroidery, the improvement did not come from ads alone: a repricing raised average order value from $122 to $153 and improved MER by 30% within two weeks (Noor Alhuda case study). Average order value is as much a marketing lever as the ad itself.

A digital marketing starter plan for a small budget

The most common mistake with a small budget is spreading it across four platforms in the first month, so no platform collects enough data to learn. Here is a 90-day starter plan that concentrates the budget:

PeriodFocusWhat you measure
Before spendingProduct page, speed, cash on delivery, shipping, Meta Pixel with Conversions API, GA4, Google conversions, and your maximum cost per orderThat orders are recorded on the platforms and match Shopify
Weeks 1–4One hero product or collection, one paid channel, 3 to 5 creatives with different angles, WhatsApp button and cart recoveryCost per order against your maximum
Weeks 5–8Pause weak creatives once there is enough data, new creatives on the winning angle, add Google Shopping if people search for your productWeekly MER and net orders
Weeks 9–12Gradually raise budget on what is profitable, post-purchase email, SEO-optimised collection pagesMER, AOV and first signs of repeat purchase

Which paid channel first? If your product is searched for by name or category (spare parts, branded electronics), Google Shopping captures ready demand. If the product has to be seen to be wanted (a new product, a solution to a problem people do not know can be solved), start with Meta, Snapchat or TikTok using short video. In both cases, add WhatsApp from day one.

The golden rule: never judge a campaign on one day, and never pause a profitable campaign to try another. Build the alternative next to it and compare. The full plan template you can copy and fill in is in our ecommerce marketing plan template.

Digital marketing skills and tools for a store

A store owner does not need to be an expert in everything, but these six skills make the difference in any digital marketing effort:

  1. Reading numbers and unit economics: margin, maximum cost per order, MER. Without them every decision is a guess.
  2. Ad copywriting in your customers’ language: a clear headline, a specific benefit, words your customer in Riyadh, Kuwait or Amman understands. For Arabic markets, that means native Arabic copy, not translation.
  3. Creative and short video: a hook in the first three seconds and the product shown in use.
  4. Ad platform management: campaign structure, audiences, budgets and reading the right columns.
  5. Tracking and analysis: Pixel, Conversions API, GA4 and UTM links.
  6. Understanding the store and conversion: product page, cart and checkout.

The core tools are mostly free:

AreaTools
Store and analyticsShopify Analytics, Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console
AdsMeta Ads Manager, Google Ads, Google Merchant Center, Snapchat Ads Manager, TikTok Ads Manager
TrackingMeta Pixel and Conversions API, Google tag, UTM links
KeywordsGoogle Keyword Planner
Content and designCanva, CapCut
Email and WhatsAppShopify Email, WhatsApp Business, WhatsApp Pilot

To learn, Google offers free courses through Skillshop and Meta offers courses through Meta Blueprint. Nothing replaces hands-on practice on a small budget, though, with the numbers read every week.

When to hire an agency vs build an in-house team

There is no single answer. The decision depends on spend, number of platforms and your time:

Your situationUsually the best fit
New store, one or two products, limited budgetRun it yourself while learning, or get help setting up tracking and the first campaign
Growing spend on more than one platform, no time to read the numbers weeklyAn eCommerce-focused agency that manages by your store’s numbers
Large, steady volume and a wide catalogAn in-house team for content and operations, with a specialist agency for ads or SEO

One employee rarely combines all six skills above, while a specialist agency sees patterns across many stores. On the other hand, an in-house team knows your product and customers closely. In every case: ad accounts, pixel and Merchant Center stay in your name, and the report starts from your store sales. Selection criteria and questions to ask before signing are in how to choose a digital marketing company for your online store.

E-SAFQA is a Shopify Partner founded in Amman in 2023 by Mousa Alhelo. We manage Meta, Google, Snapchat and TikTok ads for Shopify stores and measure them in orders, margin and MER, not clicks, through our paid ads management service.

Conclusion

Digital marketing is not one channel but a system: social ads create demand, Google and SEO capture people who search, content and creators build trust, and email and WhatsApp bring customers back. Start with the foundation (a good store, correct tracking and a maximum cost per order), then one paid channel on one hero product, measure everything by your store orders and MER, and scale only what proves profitable.

Send us your store link on WhatsApp and we will review your current channels and tell you honestly where to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is digital marketing in simple terms?

Digital marketing is promoting and selling products through digital channels such as Google, social media, email, WhatsApp and content. Unlike traditional marketing, it reaches interested people precisely and can be measured down to the order.

What are the main digital marketing channels for an online store?

SEO, Google Ads (Search, Shopping and Performance Max), social ads on Meta, Snapchat and TikTok, content and social media, email and SMS, WhatsApp, creators and UGC, and affiliate marketing. Most stores start with two or three of them, not all.

Is digital marketing the same as eCommerce?

No. eCommerce is the selling itself: the store, payment and shipping. Digital marketing is what brings buyers to the store, persuades them and brings them back, and neither works well without the other.

Which digital marketing channel should a new store start with?

If people already search for your product by name, start with Google Shopping. If the product has to be seen to be wanted, start with short video on Meta, Snapchat or TikTok, and add WhatsApp from day one.

How do I know if my digital marketing is profitable?

Calculate MER by dividing net store sales by everything you spent on all platforms, and compare cost per order with the maximum your margin allows. Each platform's ROAS is a direction signal, not a verdict on profit.
