UTM Tracking for Store Campaigns: Naming System and Template
UTM tracking for store campaigns: a fixed naming convention, influencer, WhatsApp and email links, reading results in GA4, and a ready template for your team.

UTM tracking for store campaigns is the simplest and most neglected tracking tool in eCommerce. UTMs are small parameters added to your store URL that tell Google Analytics 4 exactly where a visit came from: a specific influencer’s story, a WhatsApp broadcast, a newsletter, or one particular post. Without them those visits show up as direct or generic social traffic, and the merchant’s most important question goes unanswered: which channel actually brings orders? This guide gives you a fixed naming system, examples for influencers and WhatsApp, and how to read the results in GA4, with a ready template.
What the UTM parameters are and what each one means
| Parameter | The question it answers | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | From where? | instagram, whatsapp, snapchat, newsletter, the influencer name |
| utm_medium | Through which medium? | social, influencer, whatsapp, email, sms, cpc |
| utm_campaign | Which campaign? | ramadan-2026, white-friday, launch-serum |
| utm_content | Which creative or placement? | story-1, reel-unboxing, button-top |
| utm_term | Which keyword or segment? | Mostly paid search, or to distinguish message segments |
The final link is the product URL, then a question mark, then the parameters separated by ampersands. Example: ?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=whatsapp&utm_campaign=ramadan-2026&utm_content=broadcast-week1.
GA4 reads these parameters automatically and shows them in the traffic acquisition report under Session source / medium and Session campaign. The correct setup is explained in our GA4 Shopify setup guide.
The naming convention: the rule that comes before everything
UTM links without a naming convention are worse than none, because Instagram, instagram and IG show up as three different sources. Adopt these rules and write them in a file that everyone creating links can see:
- Lowercase always. GA4 is case-sensitive.
- No spaces. Use hyphens between words.
- A closed list of sources and mediums. A new source is added only by adding it to the list.
- A fixed campaign name format: purpose then period, such as
white-friday-2026orlaunch-oil-serum-mar. - utm_content distinguishes creatives, it does not repeat the campaign.
- Do not translate names. Use English in parameters even for an Arabic audience, to avoid encoding problems in links.
A suggested list of sources and mediums
| Channel | utm_source | utm_medium |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Instagram posts and stories | social | |
| Manual Snapchat | snapchat | social |
| Manual TikTok | tiktok | social |
| Influencer | the influencer name in Latin letters | influencer |
| WhatsApp broadcast or automated message | ||
| Newsletter | newsletter or the tool name | |
| SMS | sms | sms |
| Meta ads (if you want unified naming) | facebook or instagram | paid-social |
Influencer links: UTM plus a discount code together
Tracking influencers by link alone is incomplete, because part of the audience types the store name into the browser instead of tapping the link. The solution is to combine:
- A dedicated link per influencer:
utm_source=sara-beauty&utm_medium=influencer&utm_campaign=launch-serum-mar. - A discount code carrying the same influencer name in Shopify.
- At the end of the campaign: link purchases from GA4 plus code uses from Shopify (removing the overlap between them) equals the direct effect. Then add the rise in brand search as the indirect effect.
When several influencers run in one campaign, use utm_content to distinguish the content type (story, reel, post) so you learn which format converts best. This feeds later decisions on UGC creatives for Gulf ads.
WhatsApp links: the channel that disappears from reports
In Gulf markets WhatsApp is a complete sales channel, yet it appears in GA4 as direct traffic if it is not tagged. The rule: every link sent over WhatsApp carries a UTM, whether a manual message to one customer, a broadcast to a list, or an automated message.
When you use WhatsApp automation such as WhatsApp Pilot for order confirmations, abandoned cart recovery and back-in-stock alerts, give each message type a different utm_campaign: abandoned-cart, back-in-stock, order-confirmation. That way GA4 shows how many orders were actually recovered from abandoned cart messages compared with the rest. Details on the app are at whatsapppilot.esafqa.com.
Where to read the results in GA4
- Traffic acquisition: change the primary dimension to Session source / medium and add Session campaign as a secondary dimension. Show sessions, key events (purchase) and revenue.
- Explore: build a free-form table with the source, medium, campaign and content dimensions and the sessions, purchases and conversion rate metrics. This works best for influencer campaigns.
- The monthly report: move the top sources into the monthly eCommerce performance report with the matching spend per source; do not stop at clicks.
Remember that GA4 loses some sessions to cookies and consent, so the numbers are relative: use them to compare channels with each other, and leave final revenue to Shopify.
The mistakes that mix up your sources
- UTMs on internal links: a home page button carrying a UTM breaks the original session and credits the purchase to a fake internal source. Put UTMs only on links that arrive from outside the store.
- Inconsistent case and spaces: Instagram and instagram appear as two sources.
- Using utm_campaign to name the source: the campaign and the source are different things.
- A bio link with UTMs fixed for years: update it with each campaign, or use a general utm_campaign=bio and distinguish campaigns with content.
- Broken UTMs in email links: test the final link before sending.
- Relying on UTMs instead of platform tracking: UTMs complement the pixel and Google Ads conversions; they do not replace them.
Ready template
Copy these columns into a spreadsheet and create a row for every link before publishing it:
| Date | Channel | utm_source | utm_medium | utm_campaign | utm_content | Final URL | Owner | Notes |
|---|
Add the allowed sources and mediums at the top as a dropdown list, and a formula at the bottom that assembles the link automatically. This file is the first thing we ask for when taking over social media management for online stores.
From our experience
With Noor Alhuda, a Palestinian embroidery store selling in the United States, Canada and Australia, campaigns ran across Meta, Google and Snapchat in three countries with one currency in US dollars. Unified naming across platforms and countries is what made it possible to read order sources in one report and take the repricing decision that lifted average order value from $122 to $153 and improved MER by 30% within two weeks. Details are in the Noor Alhuda case study.
E-SAFQA’s tracking and analytics service includes setting the naming convention and training your team on it, because the best technical setup is wasted without discipline in the links.
Conclusion
UTM tracking for store campaigns needs a written naming convention more than it needs tools: lowercase, no spaces, a closed list of sources, and a fixed campaign name format. Tag every link that leaves the store toward influencers, WhatsApp and email, read it in GA4, and connect it to the monthly report so it turns from clicks into decisions.
Send us one of your current campaign links on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether GA4 reads it the way you expect.

Frequently asked questions
What are the essential UTM parameters?
utm_source (where: instagram, whatsapp, the influencer name), utm_medium (how: social, influencer, whatsapp, email), utm_campaign (which campaign), and optionally utm_content to distinguish creatives and utm_term for keywords or segments.
Do I need UTM links for Meta and Google ads?
Google Ads auto-tags links with gclid and Meta adds fbclid with optional dynamic parameters. UTMs there help unify naming in GA4, but they are far more essential for influencers, WhatsApp and email where no automatic tracking exists.
How do I track sales from a specific influencer?
Give them a link with utm_source set to their name, utm_medium=influencer and utm_campaign set to the campaign, combined with a discount code of their own. GA4 shows visits and purchases from the link, and the code captures people who typed the store name manually.
Do UTM links affect SEO?
Not when store pages carry the correct canonical tag, which is the Shopify default. But do not use them in internal links or on pages you want indexed.
