Shopify Arabic RTL Theme Guide: Fonts, Translation, Bilingual

How to make a Shopify theme fully Arabic: RTL direction, Arabic fonts, translating every element, a bilingual Arabic/English store and localisation mistakes.

Author: Mousa Alhelo · Published · 5 min read

A fully Arabic Shopify theme means four layers working together: right-to-left page direction (RTL), a clear and fast Arabic font, translation of every string in the theme from the menu to the checkout, and translation of product and collection content. Most Arabic stores on Shopify complete only one or two of these layers, so the store looks translated rather than native. This guide explains how we localise themes for our clients’ stores, the difference between Hyper, Dawn and others, and how to build a bilingual Arabic/English store without mistakes.

Layer one: RTL page direction

Arabic is written from right to left, which means the menu, logo, cart, sliders and arrows all have to mirror. On Shopify this depends on the theme:

Theme RTL support What it needs
Hyper Built-in RTL option in theme settings Light font and spacing adjustments
Kalles Built-in RTL support Review of some custom sections
Dawn (free) No ready option CSS changes to layout, icons and sliders
Impulse and other themes Varies by version Page-by-page testing before relying on it

When a theme has no RTL option, the developer adds the dir="rtl" attribute to the page element and uses CSS logical properties (margin-inline, padding-inline, text-align: start) instead of fixed left and right, then reviews every section on mobile and desktop. A comparison of themes by Arabic readiness is in the best Shopify themes for Arabic and Gulf stores.

Layer two: the Arabic font

The font is what makes a store look professional or amateur. Gulf stores commonly use modern, clear fonts such as Tajawal, Cairo, IBM Plex Sans Arabic and Noto Sans Arabic. Our rules when choosing:

  1. One font for headings and body text, or two at most.
  2. Test readability on mobile at 14 pixels, because that is where most customers shop.
  3. Load the font in a modern, lightweight format from a single source, because every extra font file slows the first load.
  4. Make sure numerals and symbols (currency, percentage) render consistently with the font.

If the store is bilingual, choose a Latin font that matches the Arabic font visually in weight and height. Font loading is part of overall store performance, which we cover in Shopify speed optimisation.

Layer three: translating theme strings

Every theme contains hundreds of fixed strings: “Add to cart”, “Sold out”, “Continue to checkout”, form error messages and filter headings. These are translated from the theme editor through the default language editing option, or through Shopify’s free Translate and Adapt app. Two tips:

  • Do not leave a single English term in the buying journey; the customer loses trust at the first foreign word.
  • Use the market’s vocabulary: the terms Gulf shoppers use for cash on delivery, cart and shipping, not literal translations.

Also review the checkout and notifications (order confirmation and shipping emails) in store settings, because they live outside the theme and are often forgotten.

Layer four: translating products, collections and pages

Product titles and descriptions, collection names and policy pages are translated at the content level, not the theme level. With a large catalog this becomes the biggest part of the work. For Cliqat we organised more than 15,000 products in Arabic and English on the Hyper theme, which was only possible with a clear method: importing data in both languages through structured files, then manually reviewing the best-selling categories. Translation apps help, but quality on the key products needs human review.

Building a bilingual Arabic/English store

A bilingual store is the best choice in the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait and for stores selling internationally. The steps on Shopify:

  1. In language settings, add the second language and publish it.
  2. In domain settings, assign a URL path to each language (such as /en for English) so every language gets its own URL that Google can index.
  3. Add the language switcher to the header or footer from theme settings.
  4. Translate the theme, then the content, and review the SEO fields (title and meta description) for each language.
  5. Confirm that tracking tools record the same events on both language versions.

The wider strategy for two languages in terms of market and content is in the bilingual Arabic/English online store guide.

Common localisation mistakes we see in audits

  • Checkout in English: translated from checkout settings and store languages, not from the theme.
  • Arrows and sliders in the wrong direction: the slide moves left while the arrow points right; needs the RTL setting in the slider or CSS.
  • Mixed numerals: use Western digits throughout the store for consistent prices and quantities.
  • Third-party app text: the reviews app or countdown timer shows English strings; choose apps that support Arabic or let you edit their text. Our apps Sale Scheduler by SalePilot and WhatsApp Pilot support Arabic in the merchant interface and customer messages (salepilot.esafqa.com and whatsapppilot.esafqa.com).
  • Images with English text: banners need an Arabic version for each language.
  • Machine translation of key products without review: produces awkward descriptions that kill trust.

How we approach localisation in our projects

We start by choosing the theme based on product type and Arabic readiness, then set RTL and the font, then translate the whole theme using the target market’s vocabulary, then import content in both languages, and finish by testing a complete purchase journey from a phone in every language. This order is part of how to create a Shopify store step by step and the core of our Shopify store development service.

From our experience: the Fragrance Hub original perfume store needed an Arabic-first store with an English version. We customised the Kalles theme in Arabic and English, published 2,054 organised products, and connected Merchant Center with Google and Meta campaigns. Precise localisation was not a cosmetic detail; it was a condition for catalog ads to run with correct titles and descriptions in each language.

Conclusion

A truly Arabic Shopify theme needs correct RTL, a suitable font, complete translation of theme and content, and mobile testing in every language. Start with an RTL-ready theme such as Hyper or Kalles where possible, and review the checkout and third-party apps before launch. Frequently asked questions

Is there a ready-made Arabic Shopify theme?

There are no Arabic-only themes in the official Theme Store, but several themes support RTL direction and multiple languages, such as Hyper and Kalles. After installing, they still need font and translation work to become fully Arabic.

Does the free Dawn theme support Arabic?

It supports translation and multiple languages, but RTL direction needs CSS changes to the layout, icons and sliders to look right. It is possible but needs a developer.

How do I translate a Shopify store into Arabic and English together?

Add both languages in the admin language settings, publish them on your domain, then translate theme strings, products and collections with Shopify's Translate and Adapt app or an advanced translation app.

What is the best Arabic font for a Shopify store?

Modern, clear fonts such as Tajawal, Cairo and IBM Plex Sans Arabic are common in Gulf stores. What matters most is that the font is readable on mobile at small sizes and loads in a lightweight format that does not slow the store.

Does localisation affect store speed?

It can, if many fonts are loaded or heavy translation apps are added. Choose one font in a modern format and one translation app, and measure speed before and after.
