Repeat Purchase Strategy for Shopify Stores: Winning the Second Order

A repeat purchase strategy for Shopify stores: post-purchase flows, WhatsApp repeat offers, subscriptions for consumables and the retention metrics that matter.

Author: Mousa Alhelo · Published · 6 min read

A repeat purchase strategy is the cheapest path to growth for a Shopify store, because the customer’s acquisition cost was already paid on the first order and every later order carries a higher margin. Yet most stores in the Gulf put their entire budget into the first order and leave the second to chance. This guide lays out a practical plan for the second and third order: the post-purchase experience, the message sequence, repeat offers over WhatsApp, subscriptions for consumables, and the retention metrics that actually matter, with a focus on beauty and consumable products where repeat purchase has the largest effect.

Why the second order matters more than the first economically

On the first order the store pays for the ad, the welcome discount and sometimes free shipping, so the order ends with a thin or negative margin. On the second order there is no acquisition cost, the discount is smaller or absent, and the customer knows and trusts the store, so they add more. That is why the allowable acquisition cost should be calculated on customer value across several orders, not the first order alone, as explained in eCommerce unit economics and contribution margin.

The practical consequence: a store that converts a larger share of new customers into returning ones can afford to pay more in ads to win the first customer, and grows faster than a competitor on the same budget.

Step one: the first order experience is the foundation of repeat purchase

No marketing message compensates for an order that arrived late or without confirmation. Four elements must be right before any offer:

  1. Instant order confirmation over WhatsApp with the order summary and expected delivery date.
  2. A tracking link sent automatically at dispatch, so the customer never has to ask where the order is.
  3. On-time delivery and immediate handling of any problem.
  4. A message two or three days after receipt: thanks, a question about the experience, and a review request.

WhatsApp Pilot sends order confirmations and tracking links automatically over WhatsApp and adds a chat button on every page so the customer can reach you quickly. Details in our guide to connecting WhatsApp to a Shopify store and at whatsapppilot.esafqa.com.

Step two: the post-purchase sequence

A simple sequence that works in most stores, adjusted by category:

Timing Message Channel Goal
Immediately after the order Order confirmation WhatsApp Reassurance and fewer cancellations
At dispatch Tracking link WhatsApp Fewer “where is my order” questions
Two days after receipt Thanks + how to use + review request WhatsApp or email Correct usage and reviews
Two to four weeks later A complementary product to what they bought Email or WhatsApp (with consent) The second order
Before the product runs out (consumables) Repeat reminder with a small offer WhatsApp (with consent) Repeat at the right time
60 to 90 days with no order Win-back offer Email or WhatsApp (with consent) Recover the customer before they are lost

Do not send everything over WhatsApp. Transactional messages (confirmation, tracking) always belong on WhatsApp, but offers should be few, clearly valuable and consented to, otherwise the number becomes a nuisance and gets blocked. See email marketing for Shopify stores in the Gulf for how to split messages between the two channels.

Step three: repeat purchase offers over WhatsApp

WhatsApp is the most opened and read channel in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Gulf, which is exactly what makes it dangerous when misused. The rules:

  • Consent first: offers go only to customers who agreed to WhatsApp marketing in the store. WhatsApp Pilot enforces this automatically and sends no offers to anyone who did not opt in.
  • Value before discount: a reminder that the product is about to run out, or a new arrival in the category they bought from, is worth more than a generic discount.
  • Personalise by category: a skincare buyer receives skincare offers, not men’s perfume promotions.
  • A unique, time-limited code to measure each message and protect margin, as explained in discount codes vs automatic discounts.
  • Low frequency: one offer message every few weeks at most.

WhatsApp Pilot includes repeat purchase offers and back-in-stock alerts among its tools, with a message log and an analytics dashboard showing what each message produced.

Step four: subscriptions for consumables

If you sell products consumed regularly (moisturisers, supplements, coffee, nappies, contact lenses), a subscription turns repeat purchase from a marketing effort into an automatic setting. Shopify offers its own subscriptions app and others in the App Store, and the principles are the same:

  • A small subscription discount in exchange for regular commitment, not a large one that kills margin.
  • Full flexibility: skip a shipment, change the date, cancel easily. A subscription that is hard to cancel destroys trust.
  • A reminder before each renewal over WhatsApp or email.
  • Monthly monitoring of the cancellation rate as a signal of customer satisfaction.

For non-recurring products (appliances, furniture), subscriptions make no sense; focus on complementary products, accessories and extended warranties instead.

Step five: customer service as a retention tool

A customer whose problem was solved quickly returns more often than one who never had a problem. A fast WhatsApp reply, a clear exchange policy and a small gesture when something goes wrong are investments in the second order, not costs. See eCommerce customer service over WhatsApp in Arabic for organising replies and templates.

How to measure retention and repeat purchase

Metric Where to get it What it tells you
Returning customer rate Shopify analytics: share of orders from customers who bought before Whether repeat purchase is improving month over month
Time between first and second order Customer reports or an order export When the repeat message should arrive
Share of customers with a second order within 90 days Customer segments in Shopify The strength of the post-purchase sequence
Customer value over 6 or 12 months against acquisition cost Total customer orders against acquisition cost from ad reports How much you can pay to acquire a new customer
Effect of WhatsApp messages The WhatsApp Pilot analytics dashboard and unique discount codes Which message actually brings orders

Review these numbers monthly and change one element of the sequence at a time so you know what made the difference.

From our experience

In the beauty stores we work with in Jordan, such as Luliz, a partnership running since 2023 with campaigns that have stayed profitable continuously since the move to Shopify, and BrandVIP, which recorded more than 778 purchases in seven months through a full Meta funnel, we always build campaigns on a four-stage funnel: awareness, consideration, purchase, then repeat purchase. The repeat stage is not an optional extra but part of the account structure, because beauty and personal care products repeat by nature and retargeting costs far less than acquisition. Details in the Luliz case study and on our paid ads management page.

Conclusion

Repeat purchase is built, not left to chance: a correct first order experience, a post-purchase sequence with deliberate timing, few and personalised WhatsApp offers with consent, subscriptions for consumables, fast customer service, and a monthly review of returning customer rate and customer value against acquisition cost. Frequently asked questions

What is a good repeat purchase rate for an online store?

It varies widely by category: beauty and consumables naturally repeat more than electronics and furniture. What matters is measuring your own returning customer rate monthly and lifting it above your baseline, not comparing it to a generic figure.

When should I send the first repeat purchase offer?

After the customer has received and tried the order, not before. For consumables, estimate the average usage period and send the reminder a few days before the product runs out. For other products, start with a thank-you and review request, then a complementary offer a few weeks later.

Do WhatsApp marketing messages need customer consent?

Yes. Send offers only to customers who agreed to WhatsApp marketing in the store. Order messages (confirmation and tracking) are transactional, but offers need clear consent.

Are subscriptions right for my store?

If you sell products consumed regularly (skincare, supplements, coffee, baby products), a subscription with a small discount makes repeat purchase automatic. For non-recurring products, focus on complementary products instead of subscriptions.
