Google Shopping ads are the listings that show a product image, price and store name at the top of search results, and for an online store they are the shortest path between purchase intent and a click. They differ from every other ad in one fundamental way: you do not write their keywords or copy. Google reads them from your product feed in Google Merchant Center. Mastering Merchant Center therefore means mastering both Shopping and Performance Max, and this guide shows how to set it up for a Gulf store running on Shopify.
How Merchant Center works with Shopify
Merchant Center is the repository Google pulls your product data from: title, description, image, price, availability, brand, identifiers, category. From Shopify, the easiest and most stable route is the official Google & YouTube channel, which creates the feed and updates it automatically whenever a price or stock level changes. Advanced feed apps allow finer control of each field and are useful for large catalogs with thousands of products.
The core steps:
- Create a Merchant Center account in the store’s name and domain, and verify domain ownership.
- Link it to Google Ads and to Shopify through the official channel.
- Set the target country, language and currency for each feed.
- Add shipping and tax settings that match what the customer sees at checkout.
- Wait for the first review, then fix disapprovals one by one.
The feed fields that make the difference
Not all fields are equal. In our experience with catalogs of thousands of products, these are the fields that decide visibility and clicks:
| Field | Importance | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| title | Highest of all | Brand + type + attribute (size, colour, capacity) in the first 70 characters |
| description | High for matching | A real description covering use and specifications, not supplier copy |
| image_link | High for clicks | White background on the first image, no text, logos or watermarks |
| brand | High for matching | The official brand name in Latin script as used globally |
| gtin / mpn | High for visibility | The real barcode number; never invented |
| google_product_category | Medium | The most specific category from Google’s taxonomy |
| product_type | Medium | Your own collection structure, useful for splitting campaigns |
| availability / price | Critical for approval | Auto-updated and matching the product page |
| custom_label | Organisational | Margin, season, bestseller; for campaign segmentation later |
Arabic titles: how to write them so they show
A shopper in Riyadh searches “سماعة سوني لاسلكية” or “sony wireless headphones” in roughly equal measure depending on the category. A good title in an Arabic feed starts with the brand in Latin script as people know it, then the product type in Arabic, then the key attribute:
- Weak: “Amazing high-quality headphones”
- Good: “Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless noise-cancelling headphones - black”
Practical rules:
- No marketing words (offer, discount, best) in the title; reviews sometimes reject them and they weaken matching.
- Put the attribute the customer searches by at the start, not the end, because long titles get truncated in display.
- For a bilingual store, create one feed per language instead of mixing languages in a single title.
If your product titles in Shopify are already messy, cleaning them there fixes the feed, the store and SEO at once. See Shopify product data cleanup.
GTINs and unique identifiers
A GTIN is the global barcode number (EAN or UPC). Products from global brands (electronics, perfumes, appliances, cosmetics) carry it on the packaging or in supplier data. Adding it helps Google match your product to the known item in its catalog, which brings price-comparison placements and higher trust.
Two rules never to break:
- Never invent GTINs or copy them from a similar product; the result is disapproval and possibly suspension.
- Own-brand or handmade products are declared as having no unique identifier (identifier_exists = no) with the brand stated.
In catalogs of thousands of products from many suppliers, collecting GTINs becomes a project in itself, and we usually start with the best-selling and highest-margin items.
Common disapprovals and how to fix them
| Disapproval | Usual real cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Price mismatch | A discount or currency shown on the page but not in the feed | Automatic sync + correct structured data on the product page |
| Availability mismatch | Out of stock in the store but still in stock in the feed | Automatic stock updates; a supplier sync engine for large catalogs |
| Invalid image | Text, logo or watermark on the image, or a small image | A clean, white-background image at sufficient resolution |
| Incorrect GTIN | An invented or copied number | The real number, or declare no identifier |
| Shipping mismatch | Feed shipping cost differs from what the customer sees | Merchant Center shipping settings matching Shopify per country |
| Site not eligible | A store without returns or contact pages | Complete the policy and contact pages |
The principle: Google crawls the product page and compares. Any gap between what the customer sees and what the feed says leads to disapproval.
Shipping and tax settings for Gulf countries
For every country you sell to, create a shipping service in Merchant Center with the same name, delivery time and cost the customer sees in Shopify. If shipping is free above a threshold, define that condition precisely. If you sell cash on delivery with an extra fee, do not hide it from the feed.
For tax, in VAT countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Oman, the simplest approach is feed prices inclusive of VAT exactly as shown on the store. Any gap between the final page price and the feed price means disapproval.
Once the feed is approved you are ready for a standard Shopping campaign, then Performance Max once conversions accumulate. The full structure is in the Google Ads guide for online stores, and the account opening and linking steps are in create a Google Ads account for your store.
From our experience
At BrandVIP, a perfume and beauty store with more than 5,000 products, the problem was supplier stock changing daily, so out-of-stock products appeared in ads and orders arrived that could not be fulfilled. The solution was a product data cleanup project (titles, variants, images, tags) followed by a sync engine that reads the supplier catalog and updates availability, price and status in the store automatically. The feed became trustworthy and PMax and Shopping ran profitably on a clean catalog. At Luliz, after the move from Magento to Shopify, reconnecting Merchant Center was among the first post-launch steps so PMax campaigns did not stop. See the BrandVIP case study.
Conclusion
Google Shopping ads for Arabic and Gulf stores are won inside Merchant Center before Google Ads: a feed auto-updated from Shopify, titles that start with brand, type and attribute, clean images, real GTINs, and shipping and tax settings that match checkout. With a clean feed, Shopping and Performance Max become far simpler to manage and cheaper per order. Frequently asked questions
Should product titles in Merchant Center be in Arabic or English?
In the feed language set for the target country. Gulf customers search in both Arabic and English, so the best setup is two feeds, or a bilingual store feeding one feed per language, with the brand name kept in Latin script in both.
Why were my products disapproved for price mismatch?
Because Google crawls the product page and compares price and availability with the feed. Usual causes: a discount shown to customers but not in the feed, a different currency, or a sync delay. Enable automatic sync from Shopify and make sure the structured data on the page is correct.
What do I do with products that have no GTIN?
If the product is your own brand or handmade, declare it in the feed as having no unique identifier and add the brand and an MPN if one exists. Never invent GTINs; that leads to disapproval or account suspension.
Do Shopping campaigns work in every Gulf country?
They work in most Gulf countries, Jordan and Egypt, but each country needs its own target-country and shipping settings. Check the supported countries list in Merchant Center documentation and create shipping settings for every country you sell to.
